The Minnesota Sales Tax Exemption saves you the sales tax on items purchased for homeschooling by granting a tax exemption number from the state. This can also be used on field trips such as SEALIFE. You only have to apply once and can use the number for years.
You can also keep track of what you spend on instructional materials, school supplies, testing, tutoring, etc. and enter the total on your MN income tax return to reduce your taxes, regardless of whether you itemize. Note that expenses for preschool children do not qualify.
Minnesota Aids to Nonpublic Students:The state will reimburse you for some of the costs of homeschooling materials.
Categories and amounts for 2024-25 include: Textbooks, Standardized Tests, and Individualized Instructional Materials $120.97 (Grades K-12), Pupil Health Services $81.07 (Grades K-12), and Secondary Pupil Guidance and Counseling Services $339.53 (Grades 7-12).
You must submit the Student Report for Aids to Nonpublic Students to your local school district office to receive a reimbursement for items in the first category. (The second and third categories can only be accessed at the school itself, i.e. your kids visit the school to see a nurse or counselor.) Note that the items you purchase under this program legally belong to the school district even though they will probably never ask for them, so most homeschoolers who use this program purchase consumable materials such as workbooks or standardized tests. Contact your local school district office to receive the form and find out their deadline. (Sauk Rapids is Sept. 15, and every district by Oct. 1.)
You must submit receipts later in the school year after submitting the initial form to be reimbursed.
Many stores, museums, and other businesses offer discounts to homeschooling families. Anytime you see something about an educator discount, it is likely that you can qualify as a homeschooler. Businesses usually want to see something that proves you are a homeschooler, such as a copy of your Initial Report to the Superintendent, MN Sales Tax Certificate of Exemption, or membership card from a homeschool organization such as HEY, MHA, MACHE, or our very own St. Cloud Unschooling Network. Local businesses that offer a homeschooling discount include Barnes & Noble, Target, Office Depot, Michael’s, and GREAT Theatre, but there are surely many more.
Some businesses offer Student Incentive Programs such as coupons or free passes as incentives to students. Marcus Theatres allows homeschoolers to participate if you submit a form each year, which needs to include a copy of your MN Sales Tax Exemption.
Every Kid Outdoorsis a government program that gives fourth-graders a free pass to many government sites until August 2025. National Parks Service, US Forest Service, and more are included.
The 6th Grade Minnesota History Pass is available to any child in 6th grade during the 2024-25 school year. The pass provides free admittance for the 6th grader (not parents or siblings) to Minnesota Historical Society sites and museums through August 31, 2025.
